皆さんこんにちは。暑いですね！

夏休みは楽しく過ごせていますか？あまり遠出もしづらい状況ですが、何か夏らしい楽しい思い出が作れていると良いなと思います。

来週からハローズの授業が再開します。言語は使わない期間が少しでもあるとどんどん忘れていってしまいます。コツリス等を見て少しでも英語をに触れる期間を作ってくれていると良いです。僕も英語を使わなければどんどん忘れていってしまうので、英語で映画やドラマを見るようにしています。遊んでいるようにも聞こえますが、大事な勉強です！本当です！ただ、字幕ばかり目で追ってしまわないように、英語字幕、字幕なしでも見るようにしましょう！来週は夏休み何したか教えてくださいね！

It’s been a surprisingly rainy August this year. This has me a little conflicted, to tell the truth. As a Seattleite, rain is familiar, comfortable, and well liked, at least for me. However, a typical rainy day in Seattle is quite different from a typical rainy day in Ogaki. For starters, while it can be a little humid (or “muggy” as we usually say), even the highest humidity doesn’t compare to the weight of the moisture suffusing the air on a good day in Ogaki. Additionally, it doesn’t really rain very hard in Seattle most of the time. On the rare occasion that it does pour, it’s the subject of much hullabaloo and conversations about the weather, a Northwest staple. In comparison, most rain in Ogaki, especially in the summer, is heavy rain. I’ve seen rainstorms this August that make “raining cats and dogs” an understatement.

As I said, I’m conflicted about this weather, not condemning. From the safety of the indoors, it’s quite exhilarating to watch a torrential rainstorm. Furthermore, I find the sound of the rain is music to my ears, and it’s never more audible than during a torrent. Additionally, while the rain can be accompanied by very high humidity, it generally still lowers the temperatures to a low enough level that the humidity is at least bearable, if not pleasant. I recognize this for the luxury that it is in Ogaki in summer, and I appreciate it. Plus, while thunderstorms are rather rare in Seattle, they’re quite prolific here in Ogaki, and I do love a good light show.

I’m a Northwesterner. I like to talk about the weather. It’s our regional pastime. Rain is familiar and comfortable, both as an experience and a subject of discussion. Even a brief rainstorm in Seattle is a source of much discussion between all people, strangers and friends alike. Such heavy rain is a much more frequent experience here in Ogaki, which gives me lots of conversation fodder when I talk to my family in Seattle.

Stay dry, everybody. But don’t forget to appreciate the rain.

かなり前に、「比叡山ドライブウェイ」についてお話ししました。

比叡山ドライブウェイと言うのは、京都府と滋賀県を跨ぐ場所に位置するドライブウェイです。

比叡山の滋賀県側からは琵琶湖を望むことができ、京都府側からは京都市・大阪市までの景色を楽しむことができます。

そして、比叡山ドライブウェイの休憩所のある駐車場に、下の写真のような場所がありました。

ご覧の通り、右足側が京都府、左足側が滋賀県です。

このとき、右半身が京都側、左半身が滋賀県側にあるという状態です。

このような、「境界」は、”boundary” , “border” と言います。

ちなみに、比叡山ドライブウェイからはこんな景色が見えますよ。。。

とても幻想的でした。車一つで行けますので、日常から離れたい場合はぜひ訪れてみてくださいね。

突然ですが、「覆水盆に返らず」という諺を知っていますか。一度してしまったことは、もう元には戻らないという意味です。

日常生活の中でもそう感じる場面はいくつかあると思います。私は最近、スマホを落としてしまって画面が割れてしまいました。起きてしまったことはもうどうしようもないですが悲しいです。

英語でも同じ意味の表現があります。それは “It is no use crying over spilt milk. (こぼれたミルクのことを嘆いてもしかたがない)” という表現です。

水が牛乳に変わっただけですが意味は同じですね。是非覚えてみてください。

ちなみに、前回に引き続き、映画「マイ・インターン」の中にもほぼ同じ意味の面白い表現が使われています。

“You can’t put the Genie back in the bottle”という表現です。「あなたはジーニーをランプの中に戻すことはできない。」という意味です。「アラジン」のキャラクターであるランプから出てくるジーニーが水や牛乳の代わりになっているということですね。

Over the break I went to a river spot in Ibi. Not really sure which river…, but a beautiful one nonetheless. With that said, on my way home I suddenly felt this biting/sting feeling in between my toes. IT WAS A LEECH! I about jumped right out the car door I was in such shock… The river was stunning though so I’d still go back.
