I made mashed potatoes for my friends last weekend. They were really delicious, and they tasted good with the good other people brought to dinner (chicken soup, fresh bread, pumpkin curry…). For some reason, I bought SO MANY potatoes!!!

Now I am stuck eating potatoes all the time. I like potatoes, but I am starting to get bored. I wish I could stop eating them now…

気が付けば今年も残り一か月ほど。

今年はずっと「コロナ」がニュースにあがりました。

そんなコロナ、最近の感染拡大から

「第三波」と言われていますね。

感染拡大が深刻な地域では

「Go to」が除外…との報道も。

感染を抑えつつ経済をまわすのはなかなか大変ではあります。

ヨーロッパでは二度目のロックダウンになっているところもあります。

イタリアの首相からは

「今年のクリスマスは大きく変わるだろう」との発言がありました。

経済をまわすことは大切なことだとは思います。

年に一度のクリスマスの過ごし方も人によっては重要でしょう。

が、それよりも自分の命や家族の方が比べ物にならないくらい

重要なはず。自分だけでなく家族を危険にさらさないためにも

今一度皆が考え直し、耐える時ではないかと思います。

前回に引き続きスリランカの旅行の思い出について書いていきたいと思います。

スリランカ中央部に位置するキャンディという街に「ペラヘラ祭り」を見るために訪れました。「ペラヘラ」は行列という意味だそうです。祭りは、仏様に敬意を払いそして農作物の豊作を願うためだそうです。だそうです。だそうです。ばっかり言うのは全部インターネットで調べた知識だからです。現地の人にもっとしっかり聞くべきでしたね。まだま、だただ旅行してるという感じですね…。

祭りの長さは3時間程その間、ダンスする人、火をひたすら振り回す人、象、が街を練り歩きます。象、が街を練り歩きます。大事なことなので2回書きました。タイプミスではありません。しかも象はデコレーションされています。めちめちゃキラキラ✨しています。ディズニーランドのエレクトリカルパレードって知っていますか。それの象版です。キラキラ光る乗り物が象になったバージョンです。日本だったら絶対経験できないことだと思います。

象の話していたら長くなってしまったので今日はここまでにします。次回もう少し象のエレクトリカルパレードについて書いていきたいと思います。

It’s getting progressively colder every week here in Gifu Prefecture. I’m stoked to be able to wear actual coats again. I’ve even gotten to wear scarves a few times! This state of affairs is much appreciated.

Last year, while it did technically snow several times, the snow didn’t really stick down here in the lowlands. I could see the trees in the hills and mountains cloaked in white crystal – which I very much enjoyed – but I was never able to build a tiny, little snowman outside my apartment. Honestly, even in Seattle, I didn’t get to build a lot of snowmen, but it still snowed (and stuck) more often than here, providing significantly more opportunities. And if I was really hurting for some snow, I could always drive up into the mountains. Well, I say mountains. I really mean one specific mountain, my favorite mountain, the best mountain in the world fight me: Mt. Rainier. Rainier gets positively dumped in snow during the fall and winter, and even clear into spring sometimes. This is an El Nino year, which means there will probably be even more snow than usual. To be honest, I’m quite jealous of my Stateside compatriots who will get to reap the benefits of that climate cycle. The last few years, El Nino skipped us.

For now, I recognize that even for the hills and mountains, proper snow is still a ways off in Gifu Prefecture. Maybe come December, I’ll trek out to Mt. Kinka to enjoy an eyeful, but for now I’ll reminisce over old photos of Rainier.

またこの季節がやってきましたね。

秋になると紅葉した葉っぱの色が景色が持つ印象を変え、

色とりどりの風景を見るとなんだか豊かな気分になりますね。

少し前のハローズ小学５年生クラスに英語で「落ち葉をかく」という表現が登場しました。

私の家では毎年、柿の木がたくさんの葉っぱを落とすので、

落ち葉かきも恒例行事になっています。

なかなか実行はできていませんが落ち葉かきをして集まった落ち葉の山を見るとそこに火をつけて焼き芋を焼きたい気分にさせられます。

焼き芋は手軽で健康的なおやつなので、この時期よく買って食べますが、

みなさんはどうですか？
